I saw the GD a couple of times that year. Sorry, I wanted to like this book. This book is just ok. I really feel like I'm at an endless fanboy party when I read this book. It just goes on and on about setlists and which version on which night is slightly better than the other version or setlist on another night. Not anything about the band, the crew, the personalities. The author doesn't present anything that would make me think he had access to anyone important in the making of these concerts. I wasn't all that crazy about 77 anyway, not enough jams compared to 73 and 74.Product details

Good weekend read.
For The Grateful Dead 1977 was an amazing year. The band was at the absolute height of their playing powers and had an arsenal of incredible new material to go along with an already deep catalogue of music. Howard takes the reader on a journey through the magical year. He brings his usual wit to the book, but make no mistake, this is more than just a fun read. The shows are dissected with precision, and the authors descriptions, opinions, and rankings are spot on. Break out your bootlegs as you read and enjoy the ride!
Dreadful. My advice is to save your money. I was a Journalism minor in college and I would stack even the weakest assignments from the least creative students in my class against this publication. As a long time dead head and contemporary of Mr. Weiner, I was very excited to read his thoughts on the great year that was '77. He calls it a "dissertation," he flatters himself. "Grateful Dead 1977" is a long winded, 200+ page Deadbase/Internet Archive review that has been better written and described by hundreds of others before and more eloquently.
From misquoted Grateful Dead lyrics to passe and contrite analogies and metaphors, I cannot suggest saving your time and money enough. His constant use of "frame" instead of "set" almost caused me to through the book across the room several times. Frame? Frames are used in bowling last time I checked and typically there are ten frames in a game of bowling whereas The Dead typically if not exclusively performed two "sets" each concert in '77, so not really getting the constant use of "frame." Don't even get me started on his overuse of the intensifier "clearly" which he "clearly" could use a Thesaurus for his next "dissertation." Enough.
Saw my first shows in 1976, but it was Rochester '77 that "set the hook" and kept me coming back for 40 years now chasing that Rochester dragon. What Howard accomplishes with this book is even more remarkable because he wasn't on tour yet. Perhaps that allows for a less subjective analysis of the music, but what I found most interesting was the explanation of the bigger picture. The Dead's building of a fanbase that was the envy of rock & roll around a core of material that came of age in 1977 and has stood the test of time and timeliness. Yes, there are a few minor errors or oversights, and I could argue over nuances like how IMHO Rochester has the definitive Half Step and Eyes of the World>Samson & Delilah, to which all others pale in comparison. But that does not diminish the value of this book. Howard "clearly" gets it and has written a book that I will go back to time and again as I revisit 1977 recordings. For any Deadhead that came of age in the late 70's or just wants to understand the band---by all means read this book!

The Grateful Dead are a lot like wine. Certain vintages are classics that deserve to be treasured and listened to again and again. 1969-1974 and 1977 offer a treasure trove of legendary tours and shows. In fact, all of those years would qualify as classic vintages. Having said that, it can be argued that 1977 was the band's last epic year. Rise of Terrapin Nation accurately and clearly documents the band's progression throughout that great year. It also offers a great explanation of why 1977 was so great and how that greatness acted as the fuel that lit the fire that burns inside Deadheads to this day. The best part of this book is that it caused me to re-listen to all of those classic shows again because the writing demanded further study of the music. Thank you Howard Weiner for a great study of what many consider that band's last truly great year.
